Is Supreme over-rated?

Supreme has had quite the success these past few years, especially with all these collaborations, that they've been doing with literally everyone. And to be honest with you I don't really understand the hype, so I thought I would dive into the world of Supreme.

Supreme was founded by in 1994 (22 years ago, to be exact) by James Jebbia. The whole brand was to cater skateboarding, hip hop and punk rock cultures, and the youth culture at large. It has now undoubtedly become one of the most popular street brands alongside BAPE ( A Bathing Ape), Stussy, Anti Social Social Club etc. but what makes Supreme so special? I mean after all it is just a boxed logo on a t-shirt, I could do that myself and save some money. But part of the Human Condition is wanting everything to be legitimate and to have the coolest things available to us, so we can show everyone else how 'cool' we are through instagram.

The problem that I have with these street wear brands is that they're becoming even more expensive than high end couture clothing brands. I was looking through the web, whilst doing some research and I came across a 'Supreme Peach Boxed Logo Hoodie' on eBay reselling at £1,200! with that money I could pay rent, go on a nice holiday, get a new MacBook or invest in some business'. It's crazy the amount of money people are willing to spend on a piece of cloth, although if you have £1,200 to spare and it won't hurt your bank account, fair enough - go for it!

Supreme has also become very well known by all their collaborations from The North Face to Nike and now Louis Vuitton, which is probably one of the most expensive collaboration of them all. In case you didn't know before the collaboration came about, back in 2000 Supreme created an LV-inspired logo t-shirts, beanies and skateboards. As a result LV wrote a cease & desist letter, which mn they had to recall the whole collection and now 17 years later, Louis Vuitton are doing a legit collab with Supreme (Oh have times have changed). This collaboration just shows how much of an impact Supreme has had in the fashion world.

Although looking at the collection itself, nothing really stands out.

Even though I have tried to understand what's so hype about this brand, I still can't put my finger on it. Although I do understand how much the brand itself has impacted the rest of the world culturally, especially from celebrity endorsements. Pretty much every Hip Hop artist and The Kardashians like to wear Supreme. Is it overrated? possibly.
