Fifth Harmony have had a pretty tough start to the year with Camila leaving the band back in December 2016 and trying to find there new sound as a four piece, so naturally I was excited about this new 5H era and there 3rd studio album.
When they released there first single 'Down' I was disappointed to say the least. It sounded exactly like Work From Home but with even more repetitive lyrics and featured a rapper. It felt like they were trying to emulate the success of WFH and hope that it would hit the chart quickly.
But then Angel came along and that made my heart skip a beat. It's a fantastic song produced by Skrillex and Poo Bear. It was different to anything 5H had ever done and the girls sounded amazing. It's by far one of my favourite track on the album.
It's taken me almost a month to write this review because when I first hear the album I switched off completely, I felt nothing. This was the first time since the band has been around where the songs didn't emote any emotion, it felt like they'd taken a step back instead of moving forward. Nonetheless I decided to listen to the album again and again and again just for measurement and slowly but surely the songs started to grow on me.
He like that is the second single from Fifth Harmony and I liked the song but it felt like they were trying too hard. It's always the same sexual innuendos when it comes to Pop music and it's not that I don't enjoy the songs but there's no substance to it, it's boring and it's been done before a million times over. he only two tracks that made me feel something was Bridges and Don't Say You Love Me, they had substance, they meant something.
Bridges is a song that has a political stance to it. The first couple of lyrics sung by Ally "Can't spend time in rewind, I'm sorry many times I remind myself / We've come way too far in our stories / To build these walls and to blind ourselves / And for every action, there's a reaction" In this political climate it's great to have four strong women stand up for what they believe in and I applaud them for that.
Although for the rest of the album it felt like every song was a filler, the rest of the tracks didn't stand out and to be honest I couldn't tell you any of the names if someone asked me. Coming from such a successful second album to this is incredibly shocking, it feel like Fifth Harmony no longer hold the music prowess they once possessed.
