Depop: The Instagram Store That's Cool

Selling stuff online isn't new, but apps like Depop have given a new breathe of fresh air into the world of consumerism. Depop allows young people to be able to sell their second hand stuff as vintage 90s fashion but also allows them to fell like a business.

Online selling stores like eBay, Amazon, Craiglist etc. feels sort of out-dated to the younger generation. Depop is an Instagram-like app that allows the seller to take stunning, creative images that not only are they pleasing to the eye but gives consumers a new way to buy.

Founded in 2011 by entrepeneur Simon Beckerman at H-Farm, an Italian business start up. It provides a mobile marketplace that allows individuals to buy and sell their items on iOs and Android. Throughout the years the company has grown majorly and is now the main sponsor for the Vans Warped Tour and has caught the eye of many celebrities to open up their own store with the proceeding going to charity.

According to Wired "Depop now has 11 million users – three quarters of them are under 25. And if you’ve got a popular store or are featured on the explore page that’s curated by Depop staff, the platform can turn into a steady source of income." Allowing young people to become their own entrepeneurs and the world of re-selling has become very popular in the past few years. On the Depop app you can buy from highstreet brands like Urban Outfitter and Zara to high fashion brands like Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Dior at very reasonable prices. It is a very eclectic range that mixes fashion that was popular 10 years ago to now.

Another great feature on the app is that you can follow your favourite stores, brands and like posts etc. just like a social media platform but with purchase in mind. You can also leave reviews for buyers and sellers that gives the person more eligibility.

Depop mostly centres itself around fashion but has opened itself to tech, books, jewellery, art and music. Its become a competitor for sites like Asos, eBay and Amazon.
