Top 5 Mixtape in the Last 5 years

Not everyone is going to agree with my views on the top 5 mixtape’s in the last 5 years. This is because there has been so many different mixtape’s being released and I don’t have time to listen to every single one. But these are the top 5 that have stood out to me in the past 5 years.

POST MALONE - AUGUST 26

I got hooked on this guy recently and I had to get my hands on his catalogue of music. This is Post Malone’s “real” mixtape, which came out a few months ago. I love this mixtape purely for how mixed it is; there no main genre when listening to this mixtape. Post goes from Hip Hop to Country and he’s insanely talented. Post has stood out from a lot of different artists because he sticks to what he likes. In a recent interview Post said that he would love to do a country album when he’s older and he showed us just how talented he is on the track ‘Hollywood Dreams Come Down” it’s a song that I can imagine driving a ford mustang through the LA Strip, while the sun is coming down. It’s a super chilled out track. Post also hooks up with Jaden Smith for the track “Lonely”, which he probably wrote whilst he was high on codeine or whatever drugs he takes. I could listen to this at a chill afterparty where everyone’s just smoking and having a great time.

TORY LANEZ - CHIXTAPE 3

Tory Lanez is a force to be reckoned with and he shows it on Chixtape 3. The mixtape is laid out like a story with spoken word skits. The mixtape is revolved around cheating and messing around with his ex girls best friend. Which of course is a usual narrative when it comes to these rappers.

Tory has a track called ‘you got it Worse” which samples Usher’s U Got It Bad. Which takes a completely different point of view on cheating, where both partners have cheated in the relationship. Although I do believe that Tory still has a long way before he can star beef on Drake (which he already has) the guy has talent and he knows how to use it.

A$AP ROCKY - LONG.LIVE.A$AP

In 2011 it was the year of A$AP ROCKY and the A$AP MOB, where he treated us with his mixtape on Halloween (how sweet!) this piece of art really changed the game at the time. No one had even heard of A$AP or his mob of talented guys (well mainstream anyway). Fast forward to 5 years and this mixtape has become a classic Hip Hop mixtape; that every Hip Hop head should listen to, if you want to become an educated listener. A$AP put NYC back on the Hip Hop map with his unique sense of style and sense of music.

DRAKE - IF YOU’RE READING THIS IT’S TOO LATE

If you’re reading this, this is my favourite mixtape ever! I’m not going to lie I am a huge Drake fan but this mixtape became a classic as soon as it hit iTunes and everywhere else. Every single track is a hit! Drake is the most talented rapper in the world right now and no one can say otherwise. He is killing the game left, right and centre.

Drake’s IYRTITL really cemented how talented he is, he is untouchable. With tracks like “Know Yourself” where I learnt that a woe is actually a friend and not a feeling of sadness. “Legend” where he sings “oh my god, oh my god, if i die then i’m a motherfucking legend” which is 100% true and his track “Enemy” where he talks about having a lot of enemies trying to drain him of his energy. Which I can completely understand, because same Drake; I have a lot of enemies. I could talk about this mixtape for days but I don’t want to bore you. If you haven’t listened to this mixtape then what the hell are you doing with your life?

CHANCE THE RAPPER - ACID RAP

I found out about chance the rapper when i was in my first year of university. I don’t quite remember how I found him but I’m glad that I did. Acid Rap is one of my favourite mixtapes out there. Chance the Rapper is such a talented guy and with Acid Rap you can see just how talented he truly is. He called the album Acid Rap because at the time he was really into taking Acid (LSD) which I’m pretty sure he wrote the mixtape whilst on Acid. One song that really stood out for me was “Cocoa Butter Kisses” I felt like I could really relate to what he was saying especially with the lyrics “cigarettes on cigarettes, my mama think I stank / I got burn holes in my hoodies, all my homies think it stands / I miss my cocoa butter kisses” the reason I could relate was because at the time I was at uni and I was far away from my parents so it made me think about them and how much I missed them.

Chance the Rapper has just released his album ‘Colouring book’ which will become another classic Chance piece of work and I’m super excited to see what he does next.
