Spotify is currently in the midst of rolling out there brand new feature that allows you to block artists that you're not interested in listening to. In the times that we're living in, where a lot of artists have problematic features about themselves, its become harder to separate the art from the artist.
Spotify at the moment is testing this feature with a small roll out on some mobile devices, that is featured on the latest ios update. Back in 2017 Spotify were concerned about offering this feature and had decided to pull back. But now they've reversed this decision, due to the increased pressure on being able to block artists after a documentary surfaced details of 25 years of accusations on sexual violence and abuse by singer R.Kelly. The #MuteRKelly protest helped bring attention to the accusations, and Sony recently broke ties with R.Kelly. Spotify previously removed R.Kellly and late rapper XXXTentacion from its own curated playlists.
Now Spotify has enabled this feature to the consumer, where the listener can decide who they want to block and who they want to listen to. I think this is a great feature to have because this gives the listener an even more personal listening experience. Although this feature has just rolled out, there will be slight changes to the app in the up and coming months.
Currently, it is only available on ios but Spotify plans to roll it out worldwide and adding to android as well.
